Advanced Learners
Academically advanced students often work differently and seek out intellectual challenges. Our SOAR (Students Opening Doors Achieving Their Potential Reaching New Heights) programs and advanced English Language Arts and Math programs in teh middle school give selected students the chance to work beyond grade level, that they may continue to be engaged academically and offer their unique gifts to the body of Christ and to society.
- Elementary SOAR – grades 3, 4, and 5 math and/or language arts
- Middle School SOAR – grade 6, 7, and 8 math and/or language arts
- Middle School – English Language Arts II – grades 7 and 8
- Middle School – Connected Math II – grade 7
- Middle School – Algebra – grade 8
Academic Support
Hudsonville Christian School employs paraprofessionals in grades 1, 2, and 3 to assist students who need support in reaching or maintaining grade level performance and goals. The process for accessing these services is very informal and fluid, and done in cooperation with parents.
We offer differentiated instruction to meet the learning needs of each of our students. One method of differentiation, which we practice at the Elementary School, is Response to Intervention (RTI). With RTI, regular progress monitoring allows classroom teachers to identify students who may be at risk of falling behind, particularly in math and reading. These students then receive additional / alternative instruction or other special services appropriate for the level of assistance needed.
This support continues in the Middle School where the emphasis shifts to study skills and strategies. Students receive additional instruction in staying organized, applying known information into new areas, and obtaining strategies for completing long-term projects. We utilize MAPs data, classroom observations and grades to identify students who may qualify for assistance.
Special Services
Students who qualify may receive the following special services from Hudsonville Christian School:
- Speech Therapy
- Physical or Occupational Therapy
- Reading
- Resource Room (for learning disabilities)
- Inclusive Education (for moderate to severe impairments)
- Executive Dysfunction
All Belong (formerly Christian Learning Center – CLC) supports Hudsonville Christian Schools in meeting the individual special needs of all our students, allowing us to be an inclusive learning community.
After School Enrichment
Participating in one or more of Hudsonville Christian Schools’ extracurricular activities can benefit students well beyond creating opportunities for social interaction. These activities are also terrific learning opportunities and provide a fun way for students to remain active and engaged. HCS offers activities for a range of interests, including math, science and drama.
