February 7 Home Communicator – “OHHH, now I get it!” Have you ever had one of those moments when the light bulb just clicks on in your brain? When you think to yourself, “Now, I get it!” Or you suddenly come up with a great idea?
One part of my job that brings me great joy is the opportunity to spend time in classrooms working with teachers. I get to hear and experience all kinds of things! 🙂 Over the past few weeks, I’ve been witness to many different “lightbulb moments.” Moments where students yell out- “OHHH! It makes sense now,” and “That reminds me of when we learned about…” Teachers savor these moments. The moments where they can almost see the thought bubble above a student’s head. The moments when they work so intentionally in explaining concepts in various ways to make sure all students understand what they’re learning, sometimes explaining things over and over until students have that lightbulb moment. Sometimes the learning comes quickly, other times it takes days – or even weeks – for those moments to happen. A kindergartener who struggles with their letters and sounds, finally puts them together and reads a full sentence–a huge lightbulb moment. A first grader who makes a connection between different judges in the Bible to reveal the pattern of God’s provision for His people. A fourth grade student who is prompted by their teacher to draw out a math problem and instantly it clicks. A seventh grader who suddenly realizes that a poem is talking about more than just stairs.
Teachers have a front-row seat to these lightbulb moments everyday in our classrooms at HCS. These beautiful moments when students suddenly understand, when something finally clicks, when students finally realize they can solve a problem on their own, undoubtedly fuel and encourage teachers in their work. Some of the best lessons our teachers at HCS teach are those unplanned ‘aha’ moments. The next time you see a teacher, ask them to share a lightbulb moment they’ve witnessed. I guarantee it will bring tears to your eyes and a smile to your face.
