January 11 Home Communicator– What do you want? What do you need? These are the questions I found myself repeatedly asking of my family in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Not surprisingly, as a mom of four, the list of “wants” I received when I asked this question didn’t line up with what I knew was needed. The latest and greatest technology wants didn’t line up with the snow pants and socks that I knew were outgrown or overused.
Now that the ribbon and paper is in the garbage, the boxes are torn down and in the recycling bin, and we find ourselves surrounded by more things we wanted but didn’t need, let’s revisit those questions and ask them of ourselves. What do I want? What do I need? More importantly, let’s maybe for a moment evaluate if what we as disciples of Christ want lines up with what we need?
When I look at my own life, I know for myself I slip into wanting to not miss out on any opportunity and filling my life with a busy schedule instead of wanting what I need: to “be still and know that He is God.” I find myself sometimes wanting to fit in, to be accepted and relevant instead of wanting what I need: “to be a vessel of honorable use, set apart as holy and useful to the master of the house.”
I am so thankful to be able to serve in a school that makes it its mission to teach and remind our children in partnership with the Christian home of what we need. Please join me in this chorus of prayer for the new year as together we ask humbly of the Lord to daily align our wants to what He knows we need.
“Lord, I need You, oh, I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You”
