January 12 Home Communicator – Epiphany – Jesus – Light of the World!
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-15 NIV
We have all experienced epiphanies in our lives – a moment when you suddenly see or understand something in a new way or a very clear way; an illuminating discovery or realization; a flash of recognition in which someone or something is seen in a new light. For Christians, January 6 was the beginning of Epiphany. Our ‘epiphany’ is not a moment but is stretched out throughout a season. This is the season celebrating the revelation of our Savior, the light of the world. Epiphany is encompasses several events and themes in Jesus’ life: the journey and visit of the Magi; Jesus’ baptism; the beginning of Jesus’ ministry of signs and wonders. It continues revealing more about Jesus as He calls the disciples, continues His teachings, performs more miracles and finally His transfiguration. Throughout this season it unveils the fuller dimensions of and uniqueness of Christ – our epiphany.
A strong message from Jesus woven throughout Epiphany is that we are called to let our light shine before others. God calls us to go out into the world – both near and far – to be witness and messengers of His story. As we continue through this season, let us not forget our calling to be bearers of the light of Jesus – to be difference makers – and look for ways and opportunities to share the wonderful message of His love. “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to five us the light of knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” 2 Cor. 4:6 NIV
