January 17 Home Communicator – Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!
Have you read the book, Hooray for Diffendoofer Day? An unfamiliar title to many, but it lands on my all time favorites list. Dr. Seuss, the book’s author, passed away before the book was ever finished. But, because he understood that this book was a gift to readers everywhere, Dr. Seuss’s editor commissioned a children’s poet and a children’s book illustrator to finish the project. The back-story is fascinating.
However, it isn’t the back-story that keeps this book on my favorites list; rather it is the main character, Miss Bonkers. Miss Bonkers is a teacher, you see. Her name is quite fitting, as she tends to teach in creative, unconventional, and often-outlandish ways with one goal in mind.
“We’ve taught you that the earth is round,
That red and white make pink,
And something else that matters more–
We’ve taught you how to think.”
At Hudsonville Christian, we teach kids how to think: creativity in Art, appreciation in Music, strategy in PE, logic in Math, design in STEM, problem solving in Social Studies, and more. However, our greater goal at Hudsonville Christian is to teach kids to love. A personal relationship with Jesus makes all of the “thinking” worthwhile. Isn’t that what “Challenging Minds and Lives for Christ” is all about?
Sincerely,
Sue Spotts, Director of Instruction
