May 9 Home Communicator – May 4th was a big day at Hudsonville Christian. We celebrated School Lunch Hero Day and some of us were pretty excited about Star Wars Day, but did you know that last Thursday was also the National Day of Prayer? Our second graders took part in this special day in a powerful way. With the help of the teachers and some amazing parent volunteers, each of the second grade classrooms was transformed into a quiet and calming space with low lighting, worship music playing, and fabric draped from the ceiling and on pieces of classroom furniture. Each room also had a specific prayer focus. In one room, students showed their adoration by praising God with worship songs and reading Psalms from the Bible. Another room was focused on praying for the needs of others. Students touched photos of people as they prayed for them and followed a variety of prayer prompts around the room. In other rooms, students were drawing things they were thankful for, tracing their hands and feet and writing ways they could be servant-hearted, and gathering around a wooden cross, reflecting on and asking forgiveness for the things they had done that had grieved God. The Holy Spirit was at work in the lives of students and adults alike in each one of the classrooms.
I don’t recall ever seeing second graders so reverently engaged in an activity. As they traveled from room to room, there was a quiet awe even in the hallways. They had spent time the day before setting up their classroom for the other second graders to experience and they were so eager to see how the Lord was going to work through the prayer activities in each room. Upon reflecting on the morning, one second grader wrote, “I felt the Holy Spirit in me.” What a blessing it is to be able to spend this day and every day at HCS in prayer to our Father!
