How do Number Days Work?
Imagine that the first day of school is a Tuesday. The cycle starts with #1, so it is a #1 Day. Wednesday is then a #2 Day and Thursday is a #3 Day. There is no school on Friday that week, so Monday (instead of Friday) becomes #4 Day, and no one misses the art, music, library, or phys. ed. class they would have had on Friday. If there is an unanticipated cancellation such as a snow day, the number schedule is adjusted to resume on the next day of school. To help parents keep track of Number Days, a Number Days schedule is printed in the Home Communicator each week.
The purpose of the Number Day schedule is to allow students to get an even distribution of their specials (art, music, library, and phys. ed.). The idea originated when specials were scheduled according to days of the week. Students were disappointed when their favorite special was on Friday, as Friday is the most frequently missed day. Now, schedules repeat every four days, so specials fall on different days of the week. The Number Days schedule also balances the curriculum for the art, music, library, and phys. ed. teachers because each class section can remain on the same lesson.
