September 5 Home Communicator – Where do you belong? How do you know that you belong? These are questions that I’ve been thinking about at the start of this new school year. I recently came across the following quote from renowned American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright:
“No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together, each the happier for the other.” (emphasis added)
Wright is known for his unique way of integrating architecture into nature, as is the case with one of his most famous designs called Fallingwater, located in Pennsylvania. Fallingwater is the perfect embodiment of Wright’s quote. The house is literally built into a boulder above a waterfall. It belongs to the nature that surrounds it.
This image reminds me of the community we have at Hudsonville Christian. As we welcome staff, students, and parents to a new school year, we hope that everyone feels a sense of community and belonging. Over the past couple of weeks, I have seen our community worshiping together, sharing smiles, hugs, high fives, offering comfort to those who are hurting, celebrating about something exciting, stepping in to help others out, and praying over a new school year. These actions towards each other help to build a community of love, respect, care, and belonging.
We are all part of this HCS community and each of us plays a role in making it a welcoming place where everyone belongs. But, greater than that, we are a community that belongs to God, our heavenly Father. Resting in this knowledge and truth gives us great value and a sense of worth we cannot find anywhere else.
Let’s join together this year to encourage a sense of belonging, not only to the HCS community, but to the One who created us in His image and loves us more than we can even imagine.
Grace and Peace,
Tricia Kiepert, Elementary Principal
