Psalm 150: 6
“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”
Mr. Brian Knot
I teach beginning through high school instrumental music, band, at both Hudsonville Christian School and Unity Christian High School. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, my teaching certificate in K-12 music from Calvin College, and my Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Michigan.
In my years of teaching at both Hudsonville Christian and elsewhere, I have taught General Music to grades PK-8, Choir, AP Music Theory and Band. I am also the music director at my church. In my free time I enjoy camping, gardening, landscaping, fixing up my 100 year old home, athletics, and spending time with my wife and five children.
Psalm 150 says “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” This verse is the primary focus in my teaching. We serve a creative God and it is my job to help students develop their own creativity in service to Christ and the church. In many ways, band is unique in that groups of students (sometimes from different grades) are combined and often remain together year after year. In this sense a real bond forms within the group which leads to both musical and spiritual growth. Ultimately, the purpose for which man was created was to glorify God. Music itself is uniquely suited for this purpose. An ensemble is a fitting demonstration of a diverse group of people and instruments coming together to make a joyful noise of praise to our Creator. Whether we are performing sacred or secular music, all things ultimately point to the Creator Himself. When we perform good music well, every aspect of the musician’s being is directed toward to praising the Giver of all good gifts.
