“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not grow faint.”
Mrs. Emily Pettinga
I graduated from Dordt College in 2005 with a B.A. in Elementary Education with a minor in reading. I was hired at NorthPointe Christian School in Grand Rapids in 2005 and I worked there until 2010. While at NorthPointe, I taught in a variety of roles. I was a Resource Room Paraprofessional; I taught 7th grade English, 7th grade Social Studies and 8th grade English. I stepped aside from teaching in 2010 to stay home with our daughter and I decided to open my own in-home daycare. I started working at HCS in 2013.
My husband and I live in Hudsonville. We have a daughter who attends Hudsonville Christian and a son who attends Ottawa Area Center. We are members at Immanuel CRC and I volunteer in the Sunday School program. I enjoy almost any outdoor activity; camping, hiking, playing at the beach, biking, picking fresh berries and fruit, and going to the Farmer’s market. I also enjoy cooking, baking, gardening and reading.
I count myself so blessed to be able to work with God’s precious children in the field of education. In Matthew 22 it says, “Love the Lord your God…and love your neighbor as yourself.” This verse is my motto for my life and my teaching. I believe my neighbor is not only my actual neighbor but also my family, the students I interact with, my co-workers, my community and those that live across the world from me. With the Lord’s help, I try to carry out this verse in my classroom. I believe all God’s children are unique and special and created with a purpose. I hope to treat each child the way their heavenly Father would; with love, compassion and dignity. I hope that by modeling these attitudes, the children I spend my day with will also develop a love and compassion for people that are different from themselves. I believe that in this way they can better show Christ’s love to everyone they meet along life’s journey.
