Mrs. Kristen Koetje
I grew up in Grandville and attended public school. Shortly after graduation, I began a cheerleading program at Unity Christian High School. It was my experience there that drew me into Christian Education. During that time, I student taught in sixth grade here at HCS. In 2006, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, majoring in Language Arts. It was my experience here in student teaching that helped me see the impact Christian education has on a child. I began my teaching career working for Grand Rapids Christian at Oakdale Elementary in a first and second grade combination room. The following year, I worked for Hudsonville Public Schools in various classrooms. After that, I landed my first full time position in a fourth and fifth grade combination classroom at Jenison Christian. While at Jenison Christian, I also served in first and third grade. I love teaching at each grade level for different reasons. Currently I am working on my Master’s in Learning Disabilities. I find it rewarding to discover a child’s unique learning style. I started teaching third grade at Hudsonville Christian the fall of 2016. I look forward to many more fun years ahead.
My husband, Brian, and I were married in 2003, live in Hudsonville, and attend Georgetown Christian Reformed Church. We are proud parents of four children who never allow us to have a dull moment! Our oldest son was born in 2006. Our second son was born in 2009 and our twins arrived in 2011. We enjoy spending time together playing games or watching movies. We also enjoy crafts, baking, and hanging out with friends.
It is my prayer that each of my students will know God as their personal Savior, see God in their learning, and understand that they are capable of great things! I feel that teaching is the best job in the world. I love to have fun by changing my voice in a read aloud, using humor, and making learning exciting. We all learn differently and I will make sure to address the needs of all my students. Building each other up is so key to creating a safe environment where everyone feels important and included. The best part about teaching in a Christian school is when God gives me opportunities to share my faith openly or prompts me to include it in a unit/lesson. At devotion time, I enjoy sharing personal stories and learning with my students how to listen to God’s word and apply it to our lives. Partnering with parents to provide a Christ-centered education is a gift. You are sending me one of your most precious gifts and they will be loved as if they were one of “my kids.” Being a Christian school teacher is such a blessing!
