Deuteronomy 6:5-7a

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  The commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  Impress them on your children.”

Mrs. Mary Jo DeWeerd

Professional Biography

I have a BA in Social Studies with a minor in Elementary Education from Grand Valley State University.  I have taught at Hudsonville Christian since 1996, as a first grade teacher for two years, then as a second grade teacher where I continue to teach.   Since receiving my degree, I have continued my education with classes and workshops that emphasize reading and language arts, as well as several classes in content areas and classroom management.

Personal Biography

I married my husband Doug in 1984, and we were blessed with two beautiful daughters and a grandchild.  They are also both teachers!  We are proud to all be graduates of Hudsonville Christian School!  In my free time I enjoy reading, gardening, and traveling with my husband.

Philosophical Biography

When my children were small, God put a burden on my heart to return to the classroom to complete the work toward the teaching degree I had started many years before.  With the help of a supportive family, I followed God’s leading and became a college student once again.  It has been a very rewarding journey.  I love to see the look in the eyes of a child as they wait for you to tell a story or explain a concept.  But even more priceless is the look of pure joy when they finally understand what it being taught.

Each child in my classroom has been created in the image of their heavenly Father.  Each child has gifts and talents and must be nurtured to grow to the fullest potential possible for the glory of God.  Teaching in a Christian school allows this to be done from a perspective that puts Christ at the center and allows us as teachers to be a part of God’s ultimate plan for each of our students.  His hand can be seen in everything we do academically, socially and spiritually. Working alongside parents is crucial to accomplish the task of growing these children for the work God has planned for them in His kingdom and toward the saving grace of Christ.  I consider it an honor and privilege to be a part of the HCS family and working with His children and their parents.
