Young 5s

Little girl in the Young 5 program at Hudsonville Christian Preschool.

Preparing for Kindergarten

Hudsonville Christian School recognizes that determining a student’s readiness for kindergarten based solely on their birthday may not be the most accurate approach. We understand that many students benefit from an additional year of support, development, and practice. As a Christian preschool, we want to celebrate each child’s gifts and abilities and walk alongside them as they learn and grow.   Our Young 5s program aligns with the standards and mission of our entire school, equipping students for a successful educational career from kindergarten to eighth grade.

"Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." - James 1:4

Learning Areas

Hudsonville Christian Young 5s integrates a Christian perspective across all areas of learning. Through an interdisciplinary approach, our curriculum for Young 5s utilizes thematic units to connect literacy, science, math, social, physical, and emotional learning.

Bible

In Young 5s, we assist students in nurturing their love for God through daily Bible stories, singing praise songs, engaging in prayer, and participating in Bible memory. Our study of the Word begins with Creation, encompasses the Old and New Testaments, and concludes with the Fruit of the Spirit. Additionally, students have the opportunity to attend Chapel and engage in discussions about what they have learned.

Literacy

Young 5s focuses on letters and sounds. Students develop their ability to read and write simple words. We cultivate a love for reading and expose students to various texts. Building upon previous knowledge, we utilize Handwriting Without Tears to reinforce the formation of capital and lowercase letters.

Math & Science

Through observation and exploration, Young 5s students have the opportunity to discover and reflect upon God’s world. They also enhance their mathematical skills by learning:

  • Number and counting concepts
  • Classifying and matching
  • Shapes
  • Patterns
  • Sorting
  • Graphing

Life Skills

Being a good friend can sometimes be challenging. In Young 5s, we strengthen life skills by emphasizing active listening and mutual respect among students. Hudsonville Christian students practice cooperation through both large and small group activities. Additionally, they develop patience, work habits, and self-control.

Specials

In addition to the core subjects mentioned above, Young 5 students participate in supplementary subjects:

  • Art
  • Library
  • Music
  • Outdoor Education
